Ready for an Hour of Code?

Technically The International Hour of Code week is later this year in December, but why wait? See video below:

Learn to code during the week of October 13th at the CBI! It’s fall break week for Cumberland County Schools, Roane State Community College and Tennessee College of Applied Technology and the CBI will be offering a number of chances to learn how to write computer code. You don’t have to be a student on fall break to attend. Everyone age 7 to 107 is welcome! There will be computers available and the instructions will be presented in game-like self-directed tutorials. I personally just finished a tutorial featuring video lectures by Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg using Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. The training included learning about repeat-loops, conditionals, and basic algorithms. Seriously, it’s fun and easy!

Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

Why learn to code? There will be 1,000,000 more computing jobs than computer science graduates by 2020. Why would we have “female only” Hour of Code timeslots…because while 57% of bachelor degrees are earned by women, only 12% of computer science degrees are. Why offer coding during fall break…because 9 out of 10 schools don’t offer computer programming classes.

Learn to Code – anybody can learn! Last year during the Hour of Code week 15 million students in 170 countries completed an Hour of Code. More girls tried computer science during this week than in the last 70 years.

During the week of October 13th there will be two formats – Hour of Code tutorials and Beyond One Hour.

Hour of Code tutorials include tutorials for beginners as well as those with more programming skills. Java Script tutorials as well as Python programming games are included. You can even build an iPhone game if you already have some programming skills and share your game on Facebook for your friends to play! There is something for everyone from age 7 to 107! (Minors must be accompanied by an adult.)

Beyond One Hour tutorials include longer computer delivered courses including Intro to Computer Science; JavaScript programming; Python; ObjectiveC; Harvard College’s CS50x class including C, PHP, JavaScript plus SQL, CSS and HTML; HTML for website development; Mindstorms; and Scratch.

Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are REQUIRED as seating and computers are limited!

Call Bonnie at 931-456-4910 to reserve your seat and computer during the following timeslots NOW!

A few newsletters ago I shared with you my dream of CBI’s 100 People Who Code. It’s time to get started! Let’s see if we can get a significant number of people introduced to computer coding in a fun and easy way during this week! We can always repeat during the official Hour of Code week in December.

Don’t delay – get your reservations in quickly! Call the CBI at 931-456-4910.

What will you be doing during fall break? I hope to see you learning a bit about computer coding!
