Starting 2015 off Right

I hope 2014 was a great year for you and that 2015 is all that you hope it will be.  There are a few things to put on your To Do list before 2015 starts rolling too fast.

Meet with your Accountant.  Have a meeting to review 2014.   Review the due dates of time sensitive forms that need to be filed.  Make sure you understand the financials and can explain them to a banker.  If fact, it’s not a bad idea to have a face to face meeting with your banking professional – whether you have a loan out or not – and let them know how 2014 went for you.  You never know when you may be back asking for a line of credit or financing for your growth.

Review Business Policies and Procedures.  Get your staff involved.  What is working well?  What isn’t?   So many businesses have been in business for years, but have repeated the same year over and over again without making any progress.  Don’t let this happen to you.   As you review Policies, be sure to review your HR manual or Employee Handbook.  if it hasn’t been updated within the last 2 years, it is probably time to update it.

Business Insurance.  The world is changing and hopefully your business is changing.  Your business policy may not be up for renewal, but now is a great time to have your Business Insurance agent review your policy and make sure you aren’t unknowingly putting your company at risk.   Did you buy new equipment?  A lot of business owners forget to update their policies throughout the year, so a review at the beginning of the year is a good idea. Are your limits of protection where they should be?  A good agent will not charge you to review your coverage.   Make the call and schedule a review.

Thank your employees and your customers.   One would think this is the no-brainer, but reaching out to your customers and saying thanks should be part of every business and often in the end of the year rush it just doesn’t happen.  Do it now.  For your employees and support team, let them know you appreciated their contributions throughout 2014.   You might be surprised how much a sincere “thank you” means to the people you count on.
